Dimensionality-Induced Change in Topological Order in Multiferroic Oxide Superlattices

چکیده

We construct ferroelectric (LuFeO3)m/(LuFe2O4) superlattices with varying index m to study the effect of confinement on topological defects. observe a thickness-dependent transition from neutral charged domain walls and emergence fractional vortices. In thin LuFeO3 layers, volume fraction grows, lowering symmetry P63cm P3c1 before reaching non-polar P63/mmc state, analogous high-temperature paraelectric transition. Our shows how dimensional stabilizes textures beyond those in bulk systems.

Giant multiferroic effects in topological GeTe-Sb2Te3 superlattices

Multiferroics, materials in which both magnetic and electric fields can induce each other, resulting in a magnetoelectric response, have been attracting increasing attention, although the induced magnetic susceptibility and dielectric constant are usually small and have typically been reported for low temperatures. The magnetoelectric response usually depends on d-electrons of transition metals...

Dimensionality control of electronic phase transitions in nickel-oxide superlattices.

The competition between collective quantum phases in materials with strongly correlated electrons depends sensitively on the dimensionality of the electron system, which is difficult to control by standard solid-state chemistry. We have fabricated superlattices of the paramagnetic metal lanthanum nickelate (LaNiO(3)) and the wide-gap insulator lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO(3)) with atomically prec...

Dimensionality Control of d-orbital Occupation in Oxide Superlattices

Manipulating the orbital state in a strongly correlated electron system is of fundamental and technological importance for exploring and developing novel electronic phases. Here, we report an unambiguous demonstration of orbital occupancy control between t2g and eg multiplets in quasi-two-dimensional transition metal oxide superlattices (SLs) composed of a Mott insulator LaCoO3 and a band insul...

Interface-induced multiferroism by design in complex oxide superlattices.

Interfaces between materials present unique opportunities for the discovery of intriguing quantum phenomena. Here, we explore the possibility that, in the case of superlattices, if one of the layers is made ultrathin, unexpected properties can be induced between the two bracketing interfaces. We pursue this objective by combining advanced growth and characterization techniques with theoretical ...

Topological features and gauge fields in graphene superlattices. Detecting Topological Currents in Graphene Superlattices

The quest for crystals whose electronic bands show non trivial topological features has not ceased since the discovery of the Quantum Hall Effect. The amazing current quantization in QHE devices can be traced back to edge states which emerge from non trivial electronic structures[1, 2]. Topological properties are typically associated to integer numbers, so that they are quite robust against per...
